Due to my dire financial crisis (the one where I’m suddenly and unexpectedly $3000 in debt to the government), I’m putting up a bunch more prints for sale!  So if you’ve seen/enjoyed my art on tumblr, PLEASE consider making a purchase. I need all the help I can get right now so I can feed my babies cats.

And if you don’t need or want a print, but would like to make a donation, Ferry was kind enough to start a Chip In fundraiser for me, because she is the BEST PERSON.

Dracula (excerpt) by Tom Hiddleston, David Suchet from the album: BBC radio play

delectabledecadence:

I was casually listening to ‘Dracula’ when suddenly… Hiddles speaks in tongues. Including Hungarian. #suddennationalpride

The original passage in the book reads:

“I must say they were not cheering to me, for amongst them were “Ordog” — Satan, “Pokol” — hell, “stregoica” — witch, “vrolok” and “vlkoslak” — both mean the same thing, one being Slovak and the other Servian for something that is either werewolf or vampire.” - Bram Stoker: Dracula

‘Ordog’ is a misspelled (and thus slightly mispronounced) form of ördög, Hungarian for devil. (Stoker gives the translation as Satan, though strictly speaking the word for that is sátán.)

‘Pokol’ is Hungarian for hell.

‘Stregoica’ is Rumenian for witch and appears to be a misspelling of strigoaică.

‘Vrolok’ is Slovak for werewolf (though am not certain about the spelling).

‘Vlkoslak’ also means werewolf and is another case of misspelling. Stoker states it’s Serbian, but Wikipedia thinks he is wrong.

Czech Republic (vlkodlak), Slovakia (vlkolak), Serbia (вукодлак - vukodlak)

Also, here I’m stepping on more swampy ground, but depending on what nationality the little girl is, she would probably say vampir, úpir, pijavica or moroi, but not vampire. Those more knowledgeable than me should feel free to let me know if got something wrong.

That was some ghastly research, Mr Stoker.
